The Marlboro Record

New Trustees

“Marlboro encourages students to be critical of received wisdom, to be endlessly curious and analytical, and these are precisely the same qualities that one needs to be successful in the rapidly changing and global 21st century,” said Ted Smyth, who joined the board in February. Ted is executive vice president at McGraw Hill Financial, responsible for worldwide marketing, communications, government affairs, and corporate responsibility. He served as an Irish diplomat in the Northern Ireland peace process and other diplomatic posts, and he is director of the Glucksman Ireland House at New York University and a trustee of the Clinton Institute in University College, Dublin. “I am passionate about education and fully support the strategy set out by President Ellen and the college, and will do all I can to help implement it,” said Ted, who has a particular interest in creating more student internships. “I hope that Marlboro remains a small college dedicated to overcoming the growing income inequalities in society, and to creating an economy that invests in sustainable development rather than an endless cycle of bubbles and busts.”
